Oh it’s sooooo easy to stay positive when everything’s going great, isn’t it? But those crappy days? Not so much. And, listen, if you feel like you’re the only one having those “meh” days, I promise you, you’re not. Everyone does, even the people with the picture perfect profiles. It’s so easy to get swept up in the art of comparison on social media. Or what about those days when you feel hopelessly alone in your little “bubble”?
And you wonder, does anyone actually give a sh*t about what I’m doing?
I hear you. It’s easy to let those bad days suck the joy out of whatever you’re doing.
Whether you’re a blogger, or you’ve got a little side hustle going. Maybe you’re in the throes of starting your own biz.
Whatever it is, know this: the good days will always outnumber the bad days if you’re doing something that you love, that’s true to you. Yes, you might be thinking, this is all great to know, BUT HOW is it possible to keep that sunshine vibe going on the yuk days when you just want to chuck in the towel?
Truth? There’s no one-size-fits all answer here; you need to find something that works for YOU.
What I can tell you though is a couple of things that have helped me in the past; things I still turn to whenever I start doubting myself or start to feel those neggy vibes coming on:
3 QUICK TRICKS TO HELP YOU STAY POSITIVE
1) Cut the crap, seriously
Although this doesn’t always work, sometimes I find one of the best things to do when I’m feeling “bleh” is to grab my journal and write down what I’m grateful for. It sounds a little wishy-washy, I know, but hear me out.
When you do this, when you really think about stuff you have in your life that other people don’t have (your health, your legs, your sight, your house, food every day, the freedom to do what you want), it makes those neggy vibes feel a bit silly.
Suggestion: Get yourself a colourful notebook from Typo, or just buy a regular notebook and make a bullet journal out of it. It’s not only a little therapeutic, it’s fun and creative too.
2) Give into the feels
Like I said, sometimes writing stuff down doesn’t always work. And no matter how much you try to get back into the zone, it’s just not happening. On days like this, I usually just shut down completely and take it as a sign that I need a mental break. It’s usually my brain’s way of telling me that I need to calm things down and refocus.
So I do. I hit the gym and power the crap out of an uphill walk, go out for coffee, get out into nature, or go try on a bunch of clothes and take ridiculous selfies. Just because.
Sometimes things get so serious, it’s good to break out of your comfort zone and give your brain a chance to chill out. And nine times out of 10 after any of these, I feel revitalised and ready to take on the world again. Neggy vibes? What neggy vibes?
3) Watch a few YouTube videos
No, not music videos or calming videos or anything like that. I’m a sucker for motivational videos – you know those ones that hit right to the core and make you feel like Rocky in that famous scene on the stairs? Yip, those. Sometimes I’ll just quickly browse for a short 5-minute mash-up of motivational speeches.
Other times, I’ll need something a little more “meaty” and that’s when I turn to Gary Vaynerchuk’s YouTube channel.
I think I actually need to write a blog post about his videos as this isn’t the first post I’ve mentioned him in. But really, if you haven’t already – go check out his channel. I swear, you’ll snap out of your funk it in no time. He’s so successful, yet doesn’t have one of those annoying egos; he gives good, solid advice and tells it like it is. I always feel insanely inspired after watching his videos.
So that’s it. Not rocket science or anything – just my two cents on what usually works for me.
