As I sit here sipping my cappuccino and feeling like a self-entitled millennial (okay, maybe I’m just shy of that one – but I’m going to pretend I’m not) – I’m reminded how important these “me time” mini moments are.
These little luxuries. No wait… didn’t I just say that this wasn’t a luxury? Well, it is and it isn’t.
It IS, because it makes us feel good. It’s a treat. Going out to have a pick-me-up coffee or a slice of cake IS a luxury. Being able to stay at home on a Saturday and read or blog or do whatever you like instead of working a second job IS a luxury.
But “me time” is also a NECESSITY and vital to our mental health.
Now I don’t know about you, but I’m not a real fan of getting all stressed out or feeling depressive. Trust me when I say, I’ve been to both extremes this year.
It’s NOT fun.
THE CONSTANT NEED FOR “MORE”
When you’re always pushing, trying to do things perfectly, trying to be the best you can be, feeling stuck, and dealing with unexpected major life changes – it’s an open invitation for all sorts of crazies.
I’ve always been a HUGE fan of self-care and wellness.
Even if it sounds a little “out there” or wishy-washy. I promise you, it’s not. Not in today’s “always switched on”, hustle-hustle, “look at me” way of living – it should be MANDATORY.
Whether you’re a wannabe entrepreneur, a blogger, or just trying to be happier… we ALL feel the pressures of this (mostly awesome, sometimes not so much) digital way of living and constant need to be doing more.
More healthy. More career stuff. More passion projects. More travel. More, more… MORE.
It’s mentally exhausting.
Especially if you’re more of a sensitive soul or gentle heart, like I am. All that overthinking and daydreaming? Not always such a good thing.
HOW “ME TIME” HELPS YOU STRESS OUT LESS
There’s a saying that goes something like this: “You can’t fill someone else’s cup when yours is empty.” I feel like we all need to print this on a gigantic A1 page and look at it every day.
Because we forget.
Mental health has become a much talked about topic these days – and rightly so. Just remember Robin Williams. Depression is not something to be taken lightly.
And neither is self care. And no, it’s NOT selfish. Anyone who tells you otherwise, please just go Google and you’ll find a whole bunch of scientific facts as to why it’s vital for our mental wellbeing.
When you look after yourself – your health (both mental and physical), when you’re honest with who you are as a person and you stop putting on the mask, and when you do things that bring you complete and utter joy… EVERYTHING comes together.
“Me time” has a way of helping you realise what’s important.
It ignites an inner happiness. It helps you feel more recharged so that you can brave the world and do what you gotta do.
Your “me time” could differ very much from mine…
It just depends on your personality and personal preferences.
Maybe you like long, leisurely walks (speaking of, have you tried walking a 5km parkrun on a Saturday morning? GREAT way to start the weekend out in nature).
Maybe you enjoy trying out new coffee spots. Or, maybe journaling, writing or reading is more your thing.
But you know what?
It doesn’t all have to be creative or something zen-like. (Stretching is also really good, by the way).
Sometimes I like to just “switch off” and binge-watch my favourite series for a couple hours over the weekend. Sometimes it’s heading to the gym and sweating the heck out of a crappy week with a Zumba class. Sometimes it’s baking.
Sometimes it’s just lying on the bed in the sun and patting my cat.
Small things that are actually big things, when you think about it.
So what I’m saying here is, “me time” isn’t something to put aside for IF you have time. You MAKE the time. You have to. It’s one of those non-negotiable things. Like brushing your teeth in the morning. Don’t even think twice about it. Just block off some time during your day – EVERY day (none of this once or twice a week BS) – even if it’s just 15 minutes.
You owe it to yourself.
But you also owe it to your loved ones.
Think about that the next time you think “me time” is selfish or you don’t have the time. And if you’re still not convinced about this whole self care or “me time” thing… here’s a really great TED x talk that might inspire you a bit more…
